It is widely recognised that a radical transformation of food and agriculture systems is urgently needed in order to address converging social, economic, health and ecological crises. The European Green Deal and the Recovery Plan for Europe are important opportunities to mobilise public finance for sustainability transformations. The potential of agroecology to transform food systems and render them more resilient, sustainable and inclusive is increasingly recognized and backed by a growing body of scientific evidence. However, research shows that only a marginal proportion of public funding is dedicated to agroecology.
We will present recent findings from a number of studies (see here for links to many of these studies, and more) on the contribution of European bilateral and multilateral funding flows to agriculture and food systems, with a focus on the support for agroecology. This will be followed by an interactive panel discussion to explore existing opportunities and challenges for the scaling-up and -out of agroecology through financial support.
The event will be moderated by Emile Frison (IPES-Food) and will feature speeches from Hans Herren (IPES-Food and Biovision Foundation) and Shalmali Guttal (Focus on the Global South). The authors of studies on EU, French, UK, Belgian, Danish and Swiss public funding for agroecology will highlight some key findings. Subsequently, Emile Frison will moderate a dialogue between researchers of CAWR and IDS, presenting their key findings of political economy studies on finance for agroecology, and a panel consisting of donors and recipients of such findings to highlight some key steps for making finance work for agroecology.
